Seeking to bring every area of life into joyful submission to the Lordship of Christ

Baptism and the Unity of Cornerstone

There is one baptism: Christian baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Some Christians believe this baptism is only for believers (credobaptist), while other Christians believe it is for believers and their children (paedobaptist). But, both of these positions are orthodox positions that come from biblical convictions of true Christians. And true Christians are to be united in true churches around the gospel.

True Christians are not united together because they agree on everything, but because they agree on the main thing—the gospel. And because they agree on the main thing and yet still have differences, they are to devote themselves to bearing with one another in love and seeking to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. In other words, even though there are many real and hard disagreements among Christians, God’s Word does not lay out a necessity of separation over our differences on baptism and the like, but a necessity for unity.

Romans 15:7 says, “welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” In every true church every true Christian should be welcomed. God’s Word trumps our disagreements. Therefore, if there are credobaptists and paedobaptists in one local church—as there are at Cornerstone—they can and must live together in harmony in that local church. And they must be given the freedom to obey God’s Word as they understand it with a clear conscience.

We want to be a church that allows our membership and leadership to function in harmony under the gospel according to their conscience as it is bound by Scripture. We are united in Christ even if we disagree on baptism, or any other secondary or tertiary doctrine. Therefore, as Augustine said, “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” This is our commitment before God, in love, one to another.
